BILL NUMBER:S6136

TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to licensure fees for seniors and veterans

PURPOSE: To waive drivers license renewal fees for New York State's seniors and veterans.

SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:

Section one amends the vehicle and traffic law to waive drivers license renewal fees for New York State's seniors and veterans.

Section two establishes the effective date.

JUSTIFICATION: As New York State continues to recover and rebuild our economy, we must continue to work to identify areas where we can provide financial relief for those who need and deserve it most. In particular, our aging and vulnerable senior population, as well as our proud veterans who have served our country and state with honor and distinction.

Many seniors are living on fixed incomes which haven't kept pace with normal costs of living. Among them are many veterans who represent the backbone of our communities. Younger veterans returning from active duty face numerous obstacles in rebuilding their own lives, namely finding decent employment and financial security. New York's seniors and veterans have made numerous contributions and sacrifices to make our state and nation a safer and better place to live. They have served us, now it's our turn to serve them. This bill will provide well-deserved relief to these New Yorkers and serve as an acknowledgment of our appreciation for their invaluable sacrifice and service.

LEGISLATIVE HISTORY: This is a new bill.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS: To be determined.

EFFECTIVE DATE: Effective immediately.
