TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of the state highway system in the village of Cuba as the "Sergeant Mark Bradley Memorial Bridge"

PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL: To designate a portion of the state highway system as the "Sergeant Mark Bradley Memorial Bridge". The section of road to be named is the bridge on interstate route 86 crossing state route 305 in the village of Cuba, county of Allegany.

SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS: It would amend the highway law by adding a new section 343-z to read as follows: portion of the state highway to be designated as the

"Sergeant Mark Bradley Memorial Bridge". The bridge on interstate route eighty-six which crosses state route three hundred five in the village of Cuba, county of Allegany, shall be designated and known as the "Sergeant Mark Bradley Memorial Bridge".

§2. The Commissioner of Transportation shall provide for the installation and maintenance of adequate signing of the state highway system as designated pursuant to section one of this act.

§3. This act shall take effect immediately.

JUSTIFICATION: Sergeant Mark Bradley enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in January of 2004 after graduating from Cuba-Rushford High School in 2003.

Between 2004 and 2011 Sergeant Bradley had deployed 4 times, including deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as well as a humanitarian deployment to Haiti.

Sergeant Bradley's awards include three Marine Corps Good Conduct Medals, the National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and a Humanitarian Service Medal.

In the fall of 2010 Sergeant Bradley made it through a rigorous selection process to attend and successfully complete the Marine Corp Scout Sniper School. An accomplishment which in and of itself speaks to this young man's immense character and dedication for his country and for his fellow Marines.

On June 3, 2011 Sergeant Bradley was injured by an improvised exploding device while conducting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. sustaining serious injuries to his lower body and left arm, Sergeant Bradley fought valiantly to survive. However, on June 16, 2011 at the Bethesda Naval Hospital, Sergeant Mark Bradley passed away. His final moments were spent with his loved ones by his side.

Because of his honorable service to the United States, this bill would memorialize the bridge on interstate route eighty-six which crosses state route three hundred five in the Sergeant Bradley's hometown of Cuba in remembrance of his heroism, dedication and great sacrifice.

YOUNG -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Transportation AN ACT to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of the state highway system in the village of Cuba as the "Sergeant Mark Bradley Memorial Bridge" THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The highway law is amended by adding a new section 343-z to read as follows: S 343-Z. PORTION OF THE STATE HIGHWAY TO BE DESIGNATED AS THE "SERGEANT MARK BRADLEY MEMORIAL BRIDGE". THE BRIDGE ON INTERSTATE ROUTE EIGHTY-SIX WHICH CROSSES STATE ROUTE THREE HUNDRED FIVE IN THE VILLAGE OF CUBA, COUNTY OF ALLEGANY, SHALL BE DESIGNATED AND KNOWN AS THE "SERGEANT MARK BRADLEY MEMORIAL BRIDGE". S 2. The commissioner of transportation shall provide for the instal- lation and maintenance of adequate signing of the state highway system as designated pursuant to section one of this act. However, to avoid confusion and to limit any possible disruption of commerce, the desig- nation called for pursuant to section one of this act shall be one of ceremonial nature and the official name of such bridge shall not be changed as a result of this act. S 3. This act shall take effect immediately.
