BILL NUMBER:S6588 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend chapter 383 of the laws of 1991, relating to the incorporation of the New York Zoological Society, in relation to extending the expiration date of free one day admission to the zoological park PURPOSE: The purpose of this bill is to extend the expiration date of the one day free admission policy of the zoological park of the New York Zoological Society (the Bronx Zoo) for an additional three years. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Section 1: Amends section 3 of Chapter 383 of the Laws of 1991, that relates to the incorporation of the New York Zoological Society, to continue to reserve at least one day in each week as a free admission day for the general public, subject to such rules and regulations as the corporation may prescribe. EXISTING LAW: Chapter 49 of the Laws of 2009 expires July 1, 2012. JUSTIFICATION: This legislation was initially signed into law as Chapter 77 of the Laws of 2000. This bill extends the provisions of Chapter 77 which extends the one-day free admission policy per week for another three years. The Zoo will be able to maintain a viable fiscal position and provide the necessary means required to operate this world class facility. In addition, the Zoo will be able to maintain its educational programs for school children and continue to provide its patrons with one free admission day. Zoo attendance over the last three years, while the one-day free admission was in effect, has increased overall. LEGISLATIVE HISTORY: New bill. FISCAL IMPLICATIONS: None. EFFECTIVE DATE: This act shall take effect immediately and shall expire July 1, 2015.
