TITLE OF BILL : An act to amend the highway law, in relation to designating state route 218 in the county of Orange as the "General David H. Petraeus Highway"
PURPOSE : The purpose of this bill is to designate State Route 218 from its beginning at Route 9-W and going along such Route south to its terminus at the United States Military Academy at West Point.
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS : Section 1: Adds to Highway Law a new section 343-v to designate the "General David H. Petraeus Highway".
EXISTING LAW : None.
JUSTIFICATION : General Petraeus was born in Cornwall-on-Hudson and is a graduate of the Cornwall High School, class of 1970. Subsequently, General Petraeus was a graduate of West Point and is a former professor at the United States Military Academy. He has served in active duty in Operation Desert Storm (Kuwait), Operation Uphold Democracy (Haiti), Operation Joint Forge (Bosnia), and Operation Iraqi Freedom and the Iraq War. On January 26, 2007, he was appointed by President Bush and confirmed by the United State Senate to the position of Commanding General, Multi-National Force - Iraq and continues to this day to serve in that capacity. It is only proper that the State of New York honor this local son of the Town of Cornwall.

The highway law is amended by adding a new section 343-w to read as follows: S 343-W. PORTION OF THE STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM TO BE DESIGNATED AS THE "GENERAL DAVID H. PETRAEUS HIGHWAY". ALL THAT PORTION OF THE STATE HIGH- WAY SYSTEM BEGINNING AT THE INTERSECTION OF STATE ROUTE NINE-W AND STATE ROUTE TWO HUNDRED EIGHTEEN IN THE TOWN OF CORNWALL, AND CONTINUING IN A GENERALLY SOUTHERLY DIRECTION ON STATE ROUTE TWO HUNDRED EIGHTEEN, AND TERMINATING AT THE TERMINUS OF SUCH ROUTE TWO HUNDRED EIGHTEEN AT THE THAYER GATE (SOUTH GATE) OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY ACADEMY AT WEST POINT IN THE VILLAGE OF HIGHLAND FALLS, SHALL BE DESIGNATED AND BE KNOWN AS THE "GENERAL DAVID H. PETRAEUS HIGHWAY". S 2. The commissioner of transportation shall provide for the instal- lation and maintenance of adequate signing of the state highway system as designated pursuant to section one of this act; provided that, to avoid any confusion and to limit any possible disruption of commerce, the designation called for pursuant to section one of this act shall be one of ceremonial nature and the official name of such highway shall not be changed as a result of this act.
