BILL NUMBER: S713A
TITLE OF BILL : An act to amend the general business law, in relation to the approval of requests for insurance coverage for wheelchairs
PURPOSE : To provide that insurance companies must act on a request to cover purchase of a wheelchair within thirty days of receipt of the request.
SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS : Creates a new section 678 of the general business law which provides that insurance companies must inform the wheelchair manufacturer and client, following a request to cover purchase of a wheelchair, within thirty days of receipt of the request.
JUSTIFICATION : This legislation would provide that when an insurance company receives a request for payment for the manufacture of a wheelchair for an individ- ual, it must inform the wheelchair manufacturer and client within thirty days whether the purchase is covered by the individual's insurance policy. Many people have been left waiting for months for approval for the new wheelchairs that they so desperately need - this bill will put a limit on the amount of time people will be forced to wait and will greatly quicken the process by which individuals will receive new, wheelchairs appropriate to their needs.
LEGISLATIVE HISTORY : 2007-08: Referred to Rules
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS : None.
EFFECTIVE DATE : This act shall take effect on the sixtieth day after it shall have become a law.
