BILL NUMBER:S7246 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend chapter 658 of the laws of 2002, amending the education law, relating to citizenship requirements for permanent certification as a teacher, in relation to extending the effectiveness thereof PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL: Extend for another five years chapter 658 of the laws of 2002 which enabled a legal resident whose immigration status is that of a lawful permanent resident of the United States and who would otherwise be eligible and qualified to serve as a teacher, to apply for and to receive permanent certification as a teacher. SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS: The bill extends current law relating to teacher certification of qualified, lawful permanent residents until November 30, 2012. JUSTIFICATION: Providing children with a quality education is one of the most valuable investments we can make. FLANAGAN -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Higher Education AN ACT to amend chapter 658 of the laws of 2002, amending the education law, relating to citizenship requirements for permanent certification as a teacher, in relation to extending the effectiveness thereof THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Section 2 of chapter 658 of the laws of 2002, amending the education law relating to citizenship requirements for permanent certif- ication as a teacher, as amended by chapter 612 of the laws of 2007, is amended to read as follows: S 2. This act shall take effect immediately, and shall expire and be deemed repealed November 30, [2012] 2017. S 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
