BILL NUMBER:S7410 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to increasing the amount of the fine imposed for illegally parking PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL: To better ensure the availability of parking spots reserved for use by disabled individuals. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Would increase the maximum fine for a repeat offense of illegally parking in spots reserved for use by the disabled from the current $100 to $200. JUSTIFICATION: Throughout the State there has been widespread abuse of disabled parking spaces. Many individuals who are not disabled continue to park their vehicles in spaces designated for use by the disabled. As a result, many truly disabled individuals suffer when a reserved parking space is not readily available. This bill would significantly reduce this problem. While the sponsor recognizes the need for enhanced local enforcement, increasing the fines with this violation is a means to discourage such abuse. PRIOR LEGISLATIVE HISTORY: 2009-2010: A.968 2011-2012: A.1189 FISCAL IMPLICATIONS: To be Determined.
