TITLE OF BILL:
An act
to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of the
state highway system as the "Staff Sergeant Derek Farley
Memorial Bridge"

PURPOSE:
This legislation will designate the bridge
across a tributary
of Nassau Lake on state route 20 in the town of Nassau, county of
Rensselaer, shall be designated and known as the "Staff Sergeant
Derek Farley Memorial Bridge."

PROVISIONS:

Section 1: The highway law is amended by adding a new section 343-z to
read as follows: Portion of the state highway system to be designated
as the "Staff Sergeant Derek Farley Memorial Bridge".

JUSTIFICATION:
Staff Sergeant Derek Farley, a young soldier from
Nassau, New York, dedicated his life to public service, making many
sacrifices to ensure the safety of others.

At age 17, Derek Farley joined the military, becoming an explosive
ordnance disposal specialist, or EOD. Farley's job was to defuse or
disarm improvised explosive devices (IED) and to secure locations by
checking for bombs. Staff Sergeant Farley deployed to Iraq where he
worked grueling 12-hour-long missions. He was awarded a purple Heart
after blowing out his eardrum while detonating an explosive device
during his deployment.

Following Iraq, Staff Sergeant Farley deployed to Afghanistan. While
on a mission in Afghanistan, Farley was tragically killed when
attempting to disarm an IED.

Staff Sergeant Farley must be recognized for his selfless work in the
military. This legislation would honor his memory by designating a
bridge on state route 20 in the town of Nassau, county of Rensselaer,
as the "Staff Sergeant Derek Farley Memorial Bridge"

PRIOR LEGISLATIVE HISTORY:

FISCAL IMPACT:
None to the state.

EFFECTIVE DATE:
This act shall take effect immediately.

AN ACT to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of
 the state highway system as the "Staff Sergeant Derek Farley  Memorial
 Bridge"
 

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM
 BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

 

Section 1. The highway law is amended by adding a new section 343-z to
 read as follows:

 

S 343-Z. PORTION OF THE STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM TO BE DESIGNATED  AS  THE
 "STAFF  SERGEANT  DEREK  FARLEY  MEMORIAL  BRIDGE".  THE BRIDGE ACROSS A
 TRIBUTARY OF NASSAU LAKE ON STATE ROUTE 20 IN THE TOWN OF NASSAU, COUNTY
 OF RENSSELAER, SHALL BE DESIGNATED AND  KNOWN  AS  THE  "STAFF  SERGEANT
 DEREK FARLEY MEMORIAL BRIDGE".
 

S  2. The commissioner of transportation shall provide for the instal
 lation and maintenance of adequate signing of the state  highway  system
 as  designated  pursuant  to  section one of this act. However, to avoid
 confusion and to limit any possible disruption of commerce,  the  desig
 nation  called  for  pursuant to section one of this act shall be one of
 ceremonial nature and the official name of  such  bridge  shall  not  be
 changed as a result of this act.
 

S 3. This act shall take effect immediately.
