TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the agriculture and markets law, in relation to game bird breeding
PURPOSE:
To extend agricultural district protections to on-farm breeding of certain game birds provided that such farm is otherwise eligible for the agricultural assessment of farm operation.
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section 301 of the Agriculture and Markets Law is amended to include game birds bred and/or raised with a DEC permitted Class A game bird license within the definition of livestock and livestock products for purposes of Article 25-AA Agricultural Districts Law.
EXISTING LAW:
Existing law does not provide specific protection to game bird breeders for on-farm breeding.
JUSTIFICATION:
In this age of global competition, low prices and increasing taxes, traditional agricultural operations continually search for ways to add value to their farms and increase net farm income. One new method that farmers are beginning to employ to enhance profitability is game bird breeding. This legislation extends agricultural district protections and benefits under Article 25-AA of the Agriculture and Markets Law to game bird breeding operations
