BILL NUMBER:S7704 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of the Taconic State Parkway as the "Westchester County Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway" PURPOSE: Designates a portion of the Taconic State Parkway as the "Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway". SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Section one of this legislation amends the highway law by adding a new section 343-z which designates a portion of the state highway system in the towns of New Castle and Yorktown in Westchester County, as the West- chester County Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway. Section two of this legislation directs the commissioner of transporta- tion to provide for the installation of appropriate signage. Section three of this legislation states the effective date. JUSTIFICATION: When North Korean troops invaded South Korea on June 25,1950, the United States took immediate action to defend the freedom of the people of South Korea. BALL -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Rules AN ACT to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of the Taconic State Parkway as the "Westchester County Korean War Veter- ans Memorial Highway" THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The highway law is amended by adding a new section 343-z to read as follows: S 343-Z. PORTION OF THE STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM TO BE DESIGNATED AS THE "WESTCHESTER COUNTY KOREAN WAR VETERANS MEMORIAL HIGHWAY". ALL THAT PORTION OF THE STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM BEGINNING AT THE WESTCHESTER COUNTY LINE IN THE TOWN OF YORKTOWN, COUNTY OF WESTCHESTER, CONSTITUTING THE TACONIC STATE PARKWAY, AND CONTINUING IN A GENERALLY SOUTHERLY DIRECTION ON THE TACONIC STATE PARKWAY, AND TERMINATING AT THE NY-100/NY-133 EXIT TOWARD BRIARCLIFF MANOR/MILLWOOD IN THE TOWN OF NEW CASTLE, COUNTY OF WESTCHESTER, SHALL BE DESIGNATED AND BE KNOWN AS THE "WESTCHESTER COUNTY KOREAN WAR VETERANS MEMORIAL HIGHWAY". S 2. The commissioner of transportation shall provide for the instal- lation and maintenance of adequate signing of the state highway system as designated pursuant to section one of this act; provided that, to avoid any confusion and to limit any possible disruption of commerce, the designation called for pursuant to section one of this act shall be one of ceremonial nature and the official name of such highway shall not be changed as a result of this act.
