BILL NUMBER:S7739 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the highway law, in relation to the designation of the "Sergeant Devin Snyder Memorial Highway" PURPOSE: To designate a portion of the interstate highway 390 as the "Sergeant Devin Snyder Memorial Highway." SUMMARY: Section 1 amends the highway law by adding a new section, 343-z in order that a portion of interstate highway 390 be designated as the "Sergeant Devin Snyder Memorial Highway." Section 2 directs the commissioner of the department of transportation to provide for "Sergeant Devin Snyder Memorial Highway" signage. Section 3 provides the enacting clause. JUSTIFICATION: This legislation would celebrate the late US Army Sgt. Devin A. Snyder of Cohocton, Steuben County, who was killed June 4, 2011, while serving in Afghanistan. She was the first female soldier from western New York to die in the war and this designation would pay tribute to

O'MARA -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Rules AN ACT to amend the highway law, in relation to the designation of the "Sergeant Devin Snyder Memorial Highway" THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The highway law is amended by adding a new section 343-z to read as follows: S 343-Z. PORTION OF THE STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM TO BE DESIGNATED AS THE "SERGEANT DEVIN SNYDER MEMORIAL HIGHWAY". THAT PORTION OF THE STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM CONSTITUTING INTERSTATE ROUTE THREE HUNDRED NINETY BETWEEN EXIT TWO IN THE TOWN OF COHOCTON, COUNTY OF STEUBEN, TO EXIT THREE IN THE TOWN OF WAYLAND, COUNTY OF STEUBEN, SHALL BE DESIGNATED AS THE "SERGEANT DEVIN SNYDER MEMORIAL HIGHWAY". S 2. The commissioner of transportation shall provide for the instal- lation and maintenance of adequate signing of the state highway system as designated pursuant to section one of this act. However, to avoid confusion and to limit any possible disruption of commerce, the desig- nation called for pursuant to section one of this act shall be one of a ceremonial nature and the official name of such highway shall not be changed as a result of this act.
