BILL NUMBER:S89A

TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the executive law, in relation to creation of a uniform system for the issuance of identification cards for retired members of the state police

PURPOSE: To provide official identification cards for retired members of the state police force.

SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:

Section 1. Creates uniform identification cards to be issued to retiring state police members. The cards shall only be issued to those retiring in good standing. Retirement in good standing means retirement for purposes other than avoiding disciplinary actions that may result in dismissal for cause. The superintendent of state police is responsible for promulgating rules and regulations for obtaining information necessary to issue identification cards.

JUSTIFICATION: Retiring members of the state police force have worked decades in service of their communities. Issuing identification cards is a small token of commemoration of their tireless efforts. A uniform, official state identification card will allow a simple and reliable way of distinguishing former state police officers.

LEGISLATIVE HISTORY: 2011-12: S.7576-A/A.10300-A Passed Senate/Referred to Governmental Operations

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS: Minimal.

EFFECTIVE DATE: This act shall take effect on the sixtieth day after it shall become law.
