AN  ACT to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to prohibiting
  U turns in school zones during posted hours

  THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND  ASSEM-
BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

  Section  1. Section 1161 of the vehicle and traffic law, as amended by
chapter 157 of the laws of 1978, is amended to read as follows:
  S 1161. U turns in certain areas prohibited. A. No motor vehicle shall
make a U turn upon any curve, or upon the approach to, or near the crest
of a grade, where such motor vehicle cannot be seen by the driver of any
other motor  vehicle  approaching  from  either  direction  within  five
hundred feet.
  B.  NO  MOTOR  VEHICLE SHALL MAKE A U TURN WITHIN A SCHOOL ZONE DURING
POSTED HOURS. SUCH SCHOOL ZONE AND HOURS SHALL BE DESIGNATED BY  SIGNAGE
CONSISTENT WITH 17 NYCRR CHAPTER V, SECTION 7B.09.
  S  2.  This  act shall take effect on the ninetieth day after it shall
have become a law.

AN ACT to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to  prohibiting
  U turns in school zones during posted hours

  THE  PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

  Section 1. Section 1161 of the vehicle and traffic law, as amended  by
chapter 157 of the laws of 1978, is amended to read as follows:

PURPOSES OF THIS SUBDIVISION, THE TERM  "SCHOOL  ZONE"  SHALL  MEAN  THE
DISTANCE  ALONG A HIGHWAY PASSING A SCHOOL BUILDING, ENTRANCE OR EXIT OF
A SCHOOL ABUTTING ON THE HIGHWAY FOR WHICH A SCHOOL SIGN (S1-1) HAS BEEN
POSTED PURSUANT TO THIS CHAPTER AND IN COMPLIANCE  WITH  THE  MANUAL  ON
UNIFORM  TRAFFIC  CONTROL DEVICES MAINTAINED PURSUANT TO SECTION SIXTEEN
HUNDRED EIGHTY OF THIS CHAPTER.
  S 2. This act shall take effect on the first of November next succeed-
ing the date on which it shall have become a law.
