BILL NUMBER:S2165 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the criminal procedure law, in relation to designating police officers of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs as peace officers PURPOSE: This bill would designate Veterans Administration police officers as peace officers. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Section 2.15 of the criminal procedure law is amended to designate police officers of the United States Department of Veterans Administration as peace officers. JUSTIFICATION: The United State Department of Veterans Affairs is the uniformed police service of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, responsible for the protection of the VA Medical Centers and other facilities operated by United States Department of Veterans Affairs and the Veterans Health Administration. The VA Police have several divisions and operate separately but alongside the VA Law Enforcement Training Center (VA LETC) under the umbrella of the Office of Security

GOLDEN -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Codes AN ACT to amend the criminal procedure law, in relation to designating police officers of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs as peace officers THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Subdivision 21 of section 2.15 of the criminal procedure law, as added by chapter 549 of the laws of 1997, is amended to read as follows: 21. United States Department of Veterans [Administration] AFFAIRS police officers [employed at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Batavia]. S 2. This act shall take effect immediately. EXPLANATION--Matter in ITALICS (underscored) is new; matter in brackets [ ] is old law to be omitted. LBD03529-01-1
