BILL NUMBER:S5617 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the public officers law, in relation to residency requirements for paid firefighters in the city of Utica PURPOSE: To permit the city of Utica in the county of Oneida to appoint members of the uniformed fire department, including fire alarm dispatchers who reside in Oneida county or within a county that is adjacent to the county of Oneida. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Section 1 states that a candidate for hire as a paid member of the uniformed fire department or as a fire dispatcher may reside in the county of Oneida or within a county which is contiguous to the county of Oneida. Section 2 contains the effective date. JUSTIFICATION: In an effort to promote a greater pool of candidates and to allow for enhanced flexibility over residency location, this legislation would enable candidates for the position of paid member of the uniformed fire department or fire alarm dispatchers to accomplish their official job duties while residing in the county of Oneida or within a county which is adjacent to the county of Oneida.
