HOOPER -- read once and referred to the Committee on Libraries and Education Technology AN ACT in relation to taxes levied for library purposes by the village of Lakeview, Nassau county THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Notwithstanding the provisions of any general, special or local law to the contrary, no tax shall be levied for library purposes or services by the village of Lakeview, Nassau county, until such tax is approved by a vote of the majority of the qualified voters voting in a general village election or meeting at which taxes may be voted, provided that due public notice of the proposed action shall have been given. After such vote is complete, the election spectators, ballot clerks or appropriate designated official shall immediately canvas publicly the ballots cast and the chairperson of the election or appro- priate designated official shall publicly announce the result. Within seventy-two hours of such announcement, the chairperson, the election inspectors and ballot clerks, or appropriate designated official, shall execute and file a certificate of the result of the canvas with the appropriate library officials and the village clerk of the village of Lakeview. Upon receiving such certification, the village clerk shall notify the local assessor of such certified results. No voting results affecting tax levies pursuant to this act shall apply to more than one taxable year per general village election or meeting at which taxes may be voted. Except as otherwise provided by this act, the provisions of the educa- tion law relating to public libraries shall remain applicable to the village of Lakeview. S 2. This act shall take effect immediately and shall apply to all taxes, levied for library purposes or services by the village of Lake- view, Nassau county, and taxable years commencing on and after such effective date.
